Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Hey you everyone! We’re here to inform you that we are doing another Quick Fire Friday today! And we might just actually do an entire weekend! That’s right! A weekend full of Quick Fire action! So, to see if this might actually come to fruition, you’d best be checking in tomorrow. Cause we will do two more days of Quick Fire heavy action, trying to spread to good word on something good and heavy! And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

The Absurd – NOX

Out since the end of March, the NEW three track EP by The Absurd! It’s called NOX and will knock your socks off! Catchy by default and groovy as hell, the three tracks give you all you could possibly expect by The Absurd. Energy, charm and wit all spread out by absurdly tight riffs and all done wonderfully fuzzy! The Absurd is electric!

WE ARE H – Diskonstrukt

WE ARE H is a three piece from Leverkusen, Germany dedicated to explosive stampedes and heavy atmospheres. Indeed, sludge core, hard core, post metal, and more. Eight forceful metal tracks, that will gale it’s riffs and beats down your throat with little time for you to gasp for air. Diskonstrukt is like a siren blast in the middle of the night, a shortcut through a glass labyrinth via a hammer, delivering its often depressive and drug references with screeches, screams, howls and burls. With Karakorum being one of the few moments where their post metal brilliance receives the light and time to properly shine…

Dope Skum – Gutter South

Exactly one week from now, and all of you will be able to enjoy the new Gutter South EP by Dope Skum as much as we already have. We already mentioned their Folk Magic single a while back and we reckoned we should also say a few words about the entire seventeen and a half minutes of Dope Skum’s Gutter South. Sludge, doom, punk that feels incredibly sweaty and grimy to the touch. But touch it you must, cause it has this most irresistible quality, like a dubious batch of murky hooch, it might burn your throat but you will get the biggest buzz you can imagine…

Ambergris – Ambergris

It has been called the treasure of the sea and floating gold, it is produced by sperm whales and has been used for centuries, but for many years its origin remained a mystery. And it is also an instrumental sludge doom band from Providence, Rhode Island. We’re talking about Ambergris and their self-titled two track debut. They call it ‘Sonic Sludge’ and has the temporal ability to make those twenty minutes of heaviness feel like five; heavy on mood and atmosphere, a touch of something punk and a whole lot of mystery! It’s Ambergris!

Vazum – V-

Deathgaze, darkwave, gothic, noir, new romantic and punk. V- is a greatest hits album consisting of songs from 2020-2022 re-recorded with the punk rock ethos of Vazum's live performances. Some stonerrock influences and charmingly spooky influences. “Lyrically, V- is fueled by a distaste for idol worship, social media influencers, self-righteous zealots, corporate greed and consumerism and speaks out against domestic abuse and self-harm.” And brought to you by both the members of the duo, giving you two sides of a coin. Dark chestnut and angelic light. For those not in the know about Deathgaze duo Vazum, V- is the perfect place to start…

Solcura – I Am Weak

Alternative rock, a lot of nineties influences, grunge, metal and some prog touches! It’s the new I Am Weak single by Bournemouth, UK quartet Solcura. The first single of a new five-track EP to arrive this year. Very much in debt to the glorious days of the grunge and alternative scene, they make the sound, the tradition entirely their own. This is something that could enchant the masses and make them dominate the world…

The Big Rip – Order of The Goat Lord

This one won’t come out till early May, but why not get all of your engines running, blood pumping and send you to their bandcamp site to check out earlier singles. Cause the new EP is even better! We are talking about Norwegian foursome The Big Rip and their soon to be released Order Of The Goatlord! The self-proclaimed fast paced stoner and scandi rock outfit starts their new EP out with a semi-acoustic and honest, Americana infused track called Nomad. Warming your soul, before the doom and stoner can take hold of you once second track Goatlord starts. Midtempo heaviness to warm your blood even further! That chugging riff, so steamingly hot. Magus, Magus starts a bit faster and will have you howling along for sure. And that guitar work, ouch, blistering! And so are the drums, scalding! Final track Mons Meg, will seal the deal! The Big Rip is big fire!

World Wide Premiere - The Absurd - Possum Kingdom

World Wide Premiere - The Absurd - Possum Kingdom

We’re honored to bring to you the world wide premiere of The Absurd’s version of Possum Kingdom! Indeed that nineties grunge classic by Toadies. We love The Absurd and have done so ever since discovering that Boots On The Ground single back in 2018. We still spin the shit out of their The Sun Still Rises album and whenever we’re in the mood some cool relief; we take a ride with their The Absurd Goes To The Beach EP. So, in short, we love The Absurd! And if we are to trust the words of frontman Josh; he loves us too or at least things we’re cute…

Josh on the premiere: "We, El Absurdo Supreme, are most stoked to be featured on a blog as prestigious as this one. Joop is a warrior and a king, and also he's cute. Beware his axe. We have felled many a troll together. Also we hope you like our cover of Possum Kingdom. We switched up the drumbeat a bit, and sludged it up. It's a great song and hopefully we did it justice!"

The Doom Chart for November 2020

Doom Charts

You’ll never lose you’re mind as long as you’re heart always reminds you where you left it...” ~ Mike Cooley (Drive-By Truckers)

I don’t know about you, but 2020 has made it hard to remember where we left our minds. Luckily, as evidenced by our monthly chart, the heavy underground music scene has a huge heart and maintained its focus on releasing more killer music than ever before. November finds us with 20 Doom Charts debuts and 5 repeats from month’s prior. Dig in and let us know what you love and what we missed.

The November edition of the Doom Charts went live a couple of hours ago! A few of my personal votes went out to Thammuz, KARKARA, Ruff Majik, Starmonger, Murcielago, BIG OAF, 10 Code and The Absurd! But all the others are equally amazing, gonna start playing the Doom Charts at the Number One position for a change... Sun Crow's Quest For Oblivion starts now! Just read the blurb by Patrick: "Wielding a molten take on blackened blues, high upon wings of  existential doom and proto metal, this album oozes molasses-like  sweltering groove. These contents are heady, lysergically laced and  outright otherworldly at times but with morphing elements of aggressive  density giving way to gloomy, dismal virtuosity." How can you not immediately start listening?!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

The Absurd – The Sun Still Rises

The Absurd – The Sun Still Rises
Bent Knee Records – 2020
Rock, Hard, Stoner, Garage
Rated: ****

At the beginning of 2018 that crazy American trio The Absurd completely captured my heart, soul and mind with that amazing Boots On The Ground single. After which all the single releases, the Build The Wall album and live releases were on heavy rotation over here. And now it is their new record The Sun Still Rises that once again completely enchants and makes you go wild. The Absurd of course once again come across as commentary to the current way of life in the USA but delivers way more in terms of intensity, diversity and raw, high octane rock ‘n roll! There are moments when Year Long Disaster comes to mind; mostly due to the vocals by Ben Foerg that often sounds as chased and wild as those by Daniel Davies. They are highly repetitive though and those repetitive vocal lines work wonders on most tracks. On a few though we feel they might have missed an opportunity to hit a home run. But those few vocalized misses don’t distract one bit from the infectious, catchy and wild music! Their garage flavored hardrock and trucking stoner groove, injected with some grungy moments and psychedelic touches is absurdly good and great! With grandiose gestures and overtones of choppy rhythms and proper punches The Sun Still Rises delivers the good stuff again and again. Time to press play as The Absurd say, and you will definitely have an amazing time!

The Absurd – Boots On The Ground

The Absurd – Boots On The Ground

Remeber that single we all immediately fell in love with when we heard it first... We mentioned it in some Quick Fire Friday round back in February. Well, they have an official video now and it definitely adds to the already amazing song. This is what we said back then: "We end this Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday with an absolute zinger! This is what it's all about and this is exactly what we need! It’s The Absurd from Los Angeles. The band sounds like they’ve been around for ages and their single Boots On The Ground is an absurd and absolute homerun! Pure in all its direct delivery, pointy, sticky and fabulously luscious! A front row ticket to the freak show! The Absurd will wow you to no end and Boots On The Ground will be your soundtrack for this weekend! Check it out!" So go do it! Check it out!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

We’ve not done a Quick Fire Friday for quite some time. Even though every Friday beckons for some fast action! Some wild tunes! And some quick delivery! Well. Here we are to bring you some hot tasty tunes. To pay some attention to all those amazing releases out there. And yes, we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday. And its burns hot like molten lava!

Ritual King – Earthrise

Ritual King. A power-trio from the dirty streets of Manchester! Releasing their new three track EP Earthrise through When Planets Collide. Fuzzed out stoner and groovy hardrock with a grungy and bluesy edge. You will feel the earth rise, the groove head out with the tide and it will all feel absolutely right… That’s what you get when you listen to Ritual King!

Oopart – Oopart

Another power-trio. This time around they come from Rome, Italy. Oopart releases their debut self-titled EP featuring five amazing psychedelic blues, stoner and hardrock tracks. Very bluesy, very jammy and very tasty! This is what we need to let the sun burst through the clouds, this is what we need to let the winter die and the summer start! Yes, Oopart has the sun hidden in his sound!

Rivera – Spurned Woman

Rivera was formed in Oslo, Norway in 2015, when its genitor Mads Luis started a crusade to spread the holy energy of Rock n`Roll, coupled with dry stoner rock and a pinch of boogie. Okay, you’ve got my attention! And so does the first single Spurned Woman! With ex-members from notable Norwegian acts as Blood Tsunami, Hombre Malo, Samsaya and Kuuk, Rivera just finished recording their debut EP in Oslo with Ruben Willem (Caliban Studios). So, give us the goodies! We need more Rivera!

Stonemule – Dystopian State

The heaviest of the heavy of this Quick Fire Friday segment! There is still a lot of hardcore and punk audible on the new EP Dystopian State by Belgian crazies Stonemule. And then there is a lot of grunge, nineties alternative, a bit of sludge and a whole lot of metal! Three different vocalists shout, scream and sing the five tracks on Dystopian State to an unholy high. Something everyone definitely needs to check out!

The Absurd – Boots On The Ground

We end this Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday with an absolute zinger! Check it out!
